The Clarke County School District School Nutrition Office, on Paradise Boulevard in Athens, is home to a beautiful herb garden. School Nutrition Coordinator, Hillary Savage, says, “The Paradise Herb Garden is used to grow herbs that are incorporated into Clarke County’s school nutrition program’s menu items. This past year, we successfully incorporated fresh thyme, parsley, and cilantro into some recipes to boost their flavor. Next year, we are planning to incorporate our fresh oregano into a new hummus recipe that will debut at the high school’s in the fall. Currently, the garden is maintained by CCSD’s school nutrition central office staff as well as students from UGA and Athens Land Trust’s Young Urban Farmers program”.
This summer the garden is also growing a few tomatoes and eggplants — perhaps they will inspire future menu items, too.
