Smoothies and Smiles by Megan Connolly

This week Ms. Kelly’s 7th and 8th grade classes at Rabun County Middle School had their first experience with Northeast Georgia Farm to School.  The students learned about MyPlate and gathered around a rocking chair to listen to two books read aloud: Protein on MyPlate and Fruit on MyPlate. The students shared their favorite meals and then broke down their favorite meal into the different food groups.  The students then made a banana-strawberry smoothie.  They learned about the nutritional value of each ingredient and also matched each ingredient to its appropriate food group.  Each student added one ingredient and enjoyed the process of chopping and pouring.  The students enjoyed their smoothies and are looking forward to another Farm to School lesson next Friday!
