Good Nutrition Basics

 

This week at Level Grove Elementary, P.E. teacher Elaine Kenyon, cafeteria manager Tammy Barnes, and FoodCorps service member Susie Burton teamed up to teach grade levels about the basics of good nutrition during their “FLEX” specials time.Β  The trio discussed proper portion sizes, the concepts behind MyPlate, the difference between natural and added sugars, and the fat content in vending machine snacks. The students learned through a variety of visual aids and games, including a display that showed how much grease leaks out of a bag of chips when left on poster board over the course of a week. Β Another visual aid provided a demonstration of how much popcorn you get at the movies (a tub) versus what is an appropriate serving size for an elementary-aged child (3 cups).
