On Monday, March 7th, Cornelia Elementary 5th graders and their parents traveled to Habersham Central High’s culinary arts kitchen for an evening of learning, cooking, and eating. This was the first installment of the new “Garden to Table” series, funded by a grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and hosted by the Foodbank of Northeast Georgia, UGA Extension, and FoodCorps. Chef Jeff Morris of Clarkesville’s the Copper Pot led the session, guiding students and their parents through the preparation of 50/50 turkey/beef burgers with caramelized onions, scratch-made mayonnaise, and a side of kale chips. Participants learned how to make a quick and popular meal and how to make healthy substitutions (leaner meats and whole grain buns, for example). Students, parents, and CES and FoodBank staff are excited for the next installment of the series. Stay tuned!
