Fifth grade students at Level Grove Elementary are using their writing, editing, media, and research skills to host a new, bi-weekly garden blog. The blog updates readers about the happenings in LGES’ new school garden, and allows students the opportunity to investigate aspects of gardening they find most interesting. Students work with Habersham County’s FoodCorps service member Susie Burton to explore what’s doing well (or not so well) in the garden, examine the weather of the past week, take photos, and research and draft their blog posts. The following week, students employ strategies taught in the classroom to revise and edit their writing for publication. Level Grove’s Garden Blog not only allows these students to practice classroom skills and interact first-hand with the garden, but keeps the whole school informed and engaged with what’s growing in the garden, fostering a sense of community interest and ownership. Follow the LGES Garden Blog on the school website!
