Farm to School Student Spotlight

Dessy Rios, Student of the Month – March 2014

Seventh grader Dessy Rios of Cornelia, has been a Farm to School Ambassador since she came to Wilbanks Middle School last year.  She was one of nine students selected during the 2013-2014 school year to participate in the Farm to School pilot program at Wilbanks.

Some of the activities that Dessy has done as an Ambassador are helping with the monthly taste tests, visiting local farms that provide food to the school and sharing information about the farms with the Board of Education and at the Harvest Festival in October.

Her favorite thing about being a Farm to School Ambassador is getting to visit the participating farms.  Being on a farm is a new experience for Dessy, and she likes seeing what they are like.  One of her favorite memories is the compass observation circle at Chattooga Belle Farm.  There is something special in the center of the circle that you will have to visit the Farm to learn for yourself!

Dessy thinks that Farm to School is really cool.  She would like to get together with the other Ambassadors more often during 2014 and hopes that she will be able to continue as a Farm to School Ambassador during the next school year.
